About us & the “plan”

Come with us now on a journey through time and space…or from England to Australia…We (Sarah and Craig) have been dreaming about going travelling all year (we met on New Year’s Eve 2010) and now we are finally Nearly Ready! So sorry to all our friends and family for having to listen to us waffling on and on about going…hence the blog where I can secretly waffle away! We went to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand in March this year to try to satisfy the wanderlust but I think it just made it worse :)

Halong Bay

Our working holiday visas say we have to be in Australia before August 2012 so we thought rather than flying (24 hours trapped in a stinky hot plane with *shudder* other people) we’d go the long way via Russia and China on the Trans-Manchurian Express, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia first. The exact route will all depend on how quickly we spend our cash and whether we end up killing each other.

We have done literally no planning yet (December 2011) even though we’re leaving next month as a) all our energy has been used up in the stressful events of the past few months and b) where’s the fun in that?! Aside from the injections, visas and train tickets for Russia (yet to be bought), all we are doing at the moment is being excited and trying not to do spontaneous jigs of joy at work at the thought of not having to work for up to 8 months and saying goodbye to England…whether this approach is entirely sensible will become apparent shortly.

So we don’t know exactly where we’re going…or when…or when we’ll be back…but it’s not an adventure if little details like that are all decided beforehand.

See you on the other side…of the world :)

Oh Wow! I’m green with envy!
You’re very brave and slightly mad… I was going to say I hope everything goes to plan – but the beauty of this is that there is no real plan!
I wish you both the best of luck for this ‘once in a lifetime’ experience.
It will be fascinating following your progress via this blog.

Thanks Chris – probably more than slightly mad but I’m sure it will work out in the end! Things always have a way of working themselves out (or at least that’s what we’re hoping!) You seem to be having your own adventures but just closer to home…if I’d known about the bargains you’ve had we might have been doing a tour of Britain rather than the Far East :)

Oh it’s you!! I wondered who’d want to follow me!

This is crazy exciting and I am soooo jealous of Russia! And don’t worry about planning – it’s totally over-rated! If you plan it, it’s not an adventure but an itinerary – who wants to go on an itinerary?!

    • toaustraliathelongway 30 December 2011 at 9:59 am #

It is me! Nah I feel the same about planning – just keeping a “if you build it they will come” mentality and let the details worry about themselves! Although I would quite like it if the Russian and Chinese visas came through the post now please.

I love your blog and it has kept me inspired over the last few months but only just started using WordPress so didn’t know how to follow :D Can’t wait to get out to Oz and NZ as they look amazing from your pics :)

Ha! Stumbled across Sam’s blog via this link – a great read! Had me laughing out loud in places – especially the implications of abducting a child in Kuala Lumpar to have a play on the Radio Controlled cars!

Hey Sarah and Craig (I have a brother who spells his name with a K), Thanks for checking out my blog the other day. I am very interested in your adventures as those are all places that are on our list while living in China. Harbin is on our list although I’m not sure how we’ll be able to stay warm enough with the clothes that we have. We brought warm winter coats and things but not warm enough for that! Good luck with the non-planning.

    • toaustraliathelongway 10 January 2012 at 9:08 pm #

Hi sadly we aren’t able to make it China this time round as visa was rejected so going straight to Vietnam! I reckon if you don’t have warm enough clothes Harbin will be the place to buy them – they’re used to those temperatures so I am sure you’ll be able to pick something up along the way :) Good luck!

I plan to live vicariously through you both!!

    • toaustraliathelongway 17 January 2012 at 9:44 pm #

Only until you’ve reached your goal of saving up – it took me a year to do it and forgoing all the normal stuff you spend money on usually (new clothes etc) was boring and difficult but worth it. Good luck in getting to Italy!

Good for you. Go go go….don’t look back, do it while your young and you won’t have any problem doing it when your old. We too are making another significant move soon. Its fun, the dreaming, planning and then doing and it always works out, always.

    • toaustraliathelongway 8 March 2012 at 1:09 am #

We spent the best part of a year dreaming and saving so we are definitely not looking back at the moment! Thanks for your message good luck with your own adventure!

Hi Sarah! Thanks for visiting my blog! You guys are amazing for doing this trip! Good luck and I will be checking your posts. Sorry that you were not able to get to Russia – it is also a very interesting country to travel… :)

    • toaustraliathelongway 31 March 2012 at 3:43 pm #

No problem, your photos are amazing :) Yeah we were gutted about that but if we had gone to Russia and China, we definitely would have had to miss out on Sri Lanka so it worked out ok in the end…hopefully we can go back and see what we missed in a year or two :)

      • In Search of Perfect 31 March 2012 at 3:49 pm #

That’s so wonderful! How were you able to take off for 8 months? I’ve always wanted to travel for longer periods, but so far one month is all I get.

      • toaustraliathelongway 31 March 2012 at 3:53 pm #

I was told that I was being made redundant a year in advance, so my last working day was 30/12/11. We spent that year saving up, selling everything we owned, moving into a friend’s house for the last couple of months, not going out or buying much and dreaming of being able to get away! Craig’s self-employed so he didn’t have to ask for time off. I think there are some jobs where you can take a secondment for several months and then go back to your job, but I think those are few and far between!

      • In Search of Perfect 31 March 2012 at 9:44 pm #

That’s so great – turning a not so good thing into something amazing! Good luck to you and I am really envious of your freedom (in a good way) :)

      • toaustraliathelongway 1 April 2012 at 3:26 am #

It was luck of the draw I think, I’d been thinking of travelling for a while and then work said they were making 550 people redundant so we took our chance. We’re only free til Australia and then we have to work really, really hard to pay back the money we’ve spent :)

      • In Search of Perfect 1 April 2012 at 11:36 pm #

Oh but it’s so worth it! Good luck to you! :)

    • toaustraliathelongway 18 April 2012 at 2:05 am #

Thank you :) it’s not quite gone to the loose plan above but it’s all good so far!

      • estrellaexplores 9 May 2012 at 2:38 am #

Yes, I’m planning to move to Spain this fall which I am really excited about. But 4.5 months seems sooooo far away at the moment.

      • toaustraliathelongway 9 May 2012 at 2:40 am #

I spent a year impatiently waiting for when we could go away but it was worth it. Makes the travelling even more fun! Spain will be amazing, good luck!

Any thoughts?
